Vintage Belmont Cocktail

Wed, May 15, 24  |  scotch cocktails

This recipe recreates the Belmont Cocktail, a creamy and decadent dessert drink believed to have originated around 1908 at the Belmont Hotel in New York City. It features a blend of whiskeys, citrus, ginger, and sweet liqueurs, resulting in a complex and flavorful experience.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Brenne whiskey (or Islay Scotch whisky)
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Galliano L'Autentico liqueur
  • 1 tablespoon ginger syrup
  • 1/2 tablespoon peach liqueur
  • Lemon wheel and mint sprig (for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Ensure all your liquids are chilled for the best result. If making your own ginger syrup, prepare it in advance.
  2. Add the Brenne whiskey (or Islay Scotch), lemon juice, Galliano, ginger syrup, and peach liqueur to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds to thoroughly chill and combine the ingredients.
  3. Strain the cocktail into a chilled rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  4. Add a lemon wheel and a mint sprig for a touch of visual appeal and a refreshing aroma.

Tips:

  • Brenne whiskey offers a smooth Irish character, but for a smokier twist, use an Islay Scotch. Choose based on your preference for a smoother or smokier taste.
  • Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the brightest flavor. Pre-bottled lemon juice can have a harsher taste.
  • You can use store-bought ginger syrup or create your own using fresh ginger, sugar, and water.
  • If you prefer a less sweet drink, reduce the amount of peach liqueur by half a teaspoon.
  • Shaking the drink incorporates air, resulting in a lighter and frothier texture.

Enjoy this taste of history with your Vintage Belmont Cocktail! Remember, this is a potent drink due to the combination of liquors. Savor it slowly and appreciate the complex layers of flavor.
