A Taste of the Caribbean: Sorrel Mojito

Wed, Mar 13, 24  |  rum cocktails

The classic mojito gets a vibrant twist with the addition of sorrel, a hibiscus-based drink popular in the Caribbean. This refreshing cocktail is perfect for capturing the essence of summer and the unique flavors of the region.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz White Rum (preferably aged)
  • ¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • ½ oz Sorrel Syrup (recipe below)
  • 8-12 Fresh Mint Leaves
  • Club Soda
  • Garnish: Mint Sprig and Hibiscus Flower (optional)

For the Sorrel Syrup:

  • 1 cup Dried Sorrel (Hibiscus) Leaves
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick (optional)
  • 4 Whole Cloves (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make the Sorrel Syrup (optional): In a saucepan, combine the dried sorrel leaves, water, sugar, cinnamon stick (if using), and cloves (if using). Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve and discard the solids. Let the syrup cool completely.

  2. Muddle the mint: In a tall glass, muddle the mint leaves with the lime juice. Don't pulverize the mint, but aim to release the fragrant oils.

  3. Add rum and sorrel syrup. Pour in the white rum and sorrel syrup.

  4. Fill the glass with ice.
  5. Top with club soda. Gently stir to combine.

  6. Garnish with a mint sprig and a hibiscus flower (optional).

Flavor Fusion:

The sorrel syrup adds a beautiful ruby red hue to the drink and infuses it with a tart, hibiscus flavor. This tanginess complements the minty freshness and sweetness of the classic mojito. The aged white rum adds a touch of complexity, creating a well-balanced and refreshing cocktail.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients for the best results. Fresh mint and lime juice are essential.
  • Adjust the amount of sorrel syrup to your taste preference. Start with ½ oz and add more for a stronger hibiscus flavor.
  • If you don't have sorrel syrup, you can substitute with grenadine, but the flavor profile will be slightly different.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the rum and add more club soda.

The Sorrel Mojito is a vibrant and refreshing drink ideal for poolside gatherings, barbecues, or anytime you crave a taste of the Caribbean. It's a delightful twist on a classic that captures the essence of summer with its beautiful color and unique flavor profile.
