The Miso Mary Libertine is a unique and flavorful twist on the classic Bloody Mary cocktail, incorporating Japanese ingredients for a savory and umami-rich experience. Here's what you'll need to make it:

Ingredients:

Miso Mary Mix:

  • 3/4 cup Shiro Dashi (white bonito dashi)
  • 3/4 cup Chinese black vinegar
  • 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon Shichimi Togarashi (Japanese seven-spice powder)
  • 1/4 cup white miso paste
  • 1 tablespoon Sriracha
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons Kombu bouillon powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon Kona Wasabi powder (optional)

Cocktail:

  • 3 tablespoons Miso Mary Mix (from above)
  • 3 ounces Tomato juice
  • 3 tablespoons Vodka or Mezcal (depending on your preference)
  • Garnish: Nori seaweed sheet

Instructions:

  • If you don't want to make a big batch, you can find pre-made Miso Mary Mix online or at some specialty stores.
  • Combine all Miso Mary Mix ingredients (Shiro Dashi, black vinegar, Shichimi Togarashi, miso paste, Sriracha, Kombu powder, and Wasabi powder) in a blender and process until smooth.
  • Transfer the mix to a resealable container and refrigerate until ready to use.

Assemble the Cocktail:

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Add the Miso Mary Mix, tomato juice, and your chosen spirit (vodka or mezcal) to the shaker.
  3. Shake the cocktail vigorously for about 15 seconds to chill and combine the flavors.
  4. Strain the drink into a highball glass filled with fresh ice.
  5. Garnish your Miso Mary Libertine with a Nori seaweed sheet and enjoy this savory and umami-rich take on the Bloody Mary!

Tips:

  • Adjust the amount of Miso Mary Mix to your taste preference. Start with 3 tablespoons and add more for a stronger miso flavor.
  • If you don't have Shiro Dashi, you can substitute vegetable broth.
  • Shichimi Togarashi adds a subtle spice level. If you prefer a spicier drink, you can add a few extra dashes or use another type of chili flakes.
  • Wasabi powder is optional, but it adds a nice kick of heat.
  • This recipe makes enough Miso Mary Mix for several cocktails. You can store the leftover mix in the refrigerator for up to a week.
