The Laid-Back Luxury: Lazy Scotch Old Fashioned

Wed, Mar 20, 24  |  scotch cocktails

Craving a classic Old Fashioned but short on time (or muddling muscles)? The Lazy Scotch Old Fashioned is your answer. This recipe keeps the essence of the timeless cocktail – the rich depth of scotch, the touch of sweetness, and the aromatic bitters – but simplifies it for effortless enjoyment.

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces scotch whiskey (preferably a blend or Speyside malt)
  • ¾ ounce pre-made Demerara sugar syrup (or simple syrup)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Orange twist, for garnish

Instructions (Preparation Time: 2 minutes):

  1. Gather your tools: Grab a rocks glass, a jigger (for measuring), and a bar spoon.

  2. Chill (Optional): While not required, pre-chilling your rocks glass with ice cubes for a few seconds helps maintain the drink's temperature. Discard the ice before adding your ingredients.

  3. Combine and Stir: Pour the scotch, Demerara sugar syrup (or simple syrup), and Angostura bitters directly into the rocks glass (or pre-chilled glass). Use a bar spoon to gently stir for 15 seconds, allowing the flavors to meld and the drink to dilute slightly.

  4. Express and Garnish: Hold an orange peel over the drink and express the oils by gently squeezing it. This releases the vibrant citrus aroma.  You can either add the peel to the glass for a visual touch or discard it.

Tips:

  • Scotch Selection: Opt for a blend or a Speyside malt for this recipe. Blended scotches offer a well-rounded flavor profile, while Speyside malts tend to be smoother and fruitier. Experiment to find your favorite!

  • Sugar Syrup Matters: Demerara sugar syrup, made with Demerara sugar, adds a touch of caramel richness that complements the scotch beautifully. However, regular simple syrup works too.

  • Bitters Variations: Feel free to explore different bitters. Peychaud's bitters offer a hint of anise, while orange bitters introduce a citrusy twist.

  • Batching for Convenience: If you're entertaining, pre-mix the Lazy Scotch Old Fashioned ingredients (minus the garnish) in a pitcher. Store it in the refrigerator for up to a week. Simply pour over ice when ready to serve.

Enjoy Responsibly!

The Lazy Scotch Old Fashioned is the perfect way to unwind with a touch of sophistication. It captures the spirit of the classic cocktail without the fuss, allowing you to savor the rich complexity of scotch in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.
