Wed, Mar 13, 24  |  rum cocktails

As the air turns crisp and evenings grow longer, a comforting hot toddy becomes a welcome companion. This recipe infuses the classic drink with the vibrant flavors of hibiscus flowers, creating a soothing and unique twist perfect for chilly nights.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ oz Dark Rum (or Spiced Rum)
  • 1 ½ oz Hibiscus Tea (recipe below)
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • ½ Lemon, juiced
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick (for garnish)
  • Whole Cloves (for garnish, optional)
  • Lemon Wheel (for garnish)

For the Hibiscus Tea:

  • 1 tbsp Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • 1 cup Boiling Water

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Hibiscus Tea: Steep the dried hibiscus flowers in boiling water for 5-7 minutes. Strain the tea into a mug and discard the flowers.

  2. Combine the Rum and Honey: In a separate mug, combine the dark rum and honey. Stir until the honey dissolves.

  3. Add Lemon Juice and Hibiscus Tea: Pour in the freshly squeezed lemon juice and strained hibiscus tea.

  4. Warm Gently: Microwave the mixture for 30-45 seconds on low power, or heat gently on the stovetop until warm (not boiling).

  5. Garnish and Enjoy: Garnish your hot toddy with a cinnamon stick, a few whole cloves (if using), and a lemon wheel.

Tips:

  • Experiment with different types of rum. Dark rum offers a richer flavor profile, while spiced rum adds a touch of warmth with cinnamon and other spices.
  • Adjust the amount of honey to your taste preference. Start with 1 tablespoon and add more for a sweeter drink.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the rum and increase the amount of hibiscus tea.
  • If you prefer a stronger hibiscus flavor, use 2 tablespoons of dried flowers when steeping the tea.

A Cozy Night In:

The Hibiscus Hot Toddy is a soothing and comforting drink perfect for chilly evenings spent curled up with a good book or enjoying a quiet night in. The vibrant color and unique flavor profile will warm you from the inside out, making it a delightful way to chase away the winter blues.
