A Timeless Classic: The Sweet Old Fashioned

Wed, Mar 13, 24  |  bourbon cocktails

The Old Fashioned is a cornerstone of the cocktail world, a drink steeped in history and rich flavor. This recipe explores the "Sweet" variation, a delightful twist that caters to those who prefer a touch more sugar in their sip.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Bourbon Whiskey
  • ½ oz Simple Syrup
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Orange Peel (for garnish)
  • Maraschino Cherry (for garnish, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your glass: Chill a rocks glass by filling it with ice and letting it sit for a minute. Discard the ice before building your cocktail.

  2. Add the bitters and sugar. Dash 2 dashes of Angostura bitters into the bottom of the chilled glass. Follow with ½ oz of simple syrup.
  3. Express the orange peel. Hold an orange peel over the glass and express the oils by gently squeezing it. Release the peel into the glass or discard it.
  4. Add the bourbon and stir gently. Pour in 2 oz of bourbon and use a bar spoon to gently stir for about 10 seconds. Don't over-stir, as you don't want to dilute the drink excessively.
  5. Garnish and enjoy. Add a large ice cube and garnish with a fresh orange peel. For a touch of extra sweetness, you can also add a maraschino cherry.

Balancing Act:

The Sweet Old Fashioned takes the classic recipe and adds a touch more simple syrup for a more pronounced sweetness. This balances the rich oaky notes of the bourbon and the subtle bitterness of the Angostura bitters, creating a smooth and satisfying drink.  The orange peel adds a touch of citrusy brightness, further complementing the complex flavor profile.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients for the best results. A good bourbon is key, and fresh ingredients (orange peel) will elevate the flavor.
  • Adjust the amount of simple syrup to your taste preference. Start with ½ oz and add more for a sweeter drink.
  • For a more intense orange flavor, muddle a small piece of orange peel with the simple syrup before adding the bourbon.
  • If you don't have simple syrup, you can make your own by dissolving equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then let it cool completely before using.

The Sweet Old Fashioned is a delightful variation on a classic cocktail. It's perfect for those who appreciate a touch of sweetness in their drinks without sacrificing the complexity of the bourbon. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply unwinding after a long day, this timeless drink is sure to become a cherished part of your cocktail repertoire.
